THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY in Barbados has openly shown its support for the efforts and programmes of the Barbados Salvation Army by donating $12 000 to the organisation.

Yesterday as Abdul Mohamed, president of the Barbados Muslim Association, presented the cheque to Divisional Commander Major Dewhurst Jonas, he explained that the association had previously contributed anonymously to various causes but was now doing so openly in an effort to boost its image publicly.

“In our religion and faith it is honourable to do it anonymously, but because of the bad publicity over the past decade or so regarding the Muslims, [as a result of which] people think that we are not actively participating in the social activity and programmes, we were advised that we should do this presentation in a public forum.”

The association requested that the money be used for the Salvation Army’s feeding programme.

“We think the feeding programme which the Salvation Army runs is a very worthy cause because one of the most fundamental and basic needs of people is food, so we are happy that we can help,” Mohamed said.

In accepting the donation, Jonas said it was the largest received, apart from special donations for specific causes.

The addition of the $12 000 to the money collected through the Kettle and Mail appeals, which were launched last month, has helped the Salvation Army to reach its goal of $500 000 to undertake its social programme for 2011. (LK)
